The Royal City Capitals pushed the regular season champion Ladner Pioneers to five games in the best-of 5 WCSLA Finals, but couldn't finish them off as the Capitals fell 10-4 to the Pioneers in Game 5 Wednesday August 16th in North Delta.
In Game 5, after Ladner opened the scoring 2 1/2 minutes into the game, Nate Schmidt tied it at 8:14, only to have the hosts restore the lead 30 seconds later. Again the Schmidt tied things up with 4:34 left in the first period only to have Ladner score eight seconds later to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead heading into the first intermission. Shots favoured the hosts 18-14. In the second period, things opened up offensively and shut down defensively for the Pioneers as they scored five goals and only surrendered one. After Ladner increased the lead to four by the seven minute mark, Mark Negrin found the twine at 9:31 to make the score 6-3. A pair of Ladner goals followed to make it 8-3 to close out a period that saw Royal City outshoot Ladner 19-17. Joe Taylor scored 3:01 into the final frame, but two more goals sealed the deal for the Pioneers. The Capitals outshot the Pioneers 19-11 in the third period and 52-46 in the contest. Neil Tyacke stopped 36 of 46 shots in the Capitals net, while Jimmy McBride (3A) led team scoring on the night.
The Capitals dropped Game 1 on the road by the score of 9-8, won Game 2 at home by a 14-7 count, won Game 3 on the road 8-6 and lost Game 4 at home 13-4.
